Preserved moss walls shouldn’t be installed outdoors and in direct sunlight, as the unfortunate result would be a scorched moss wall which will quickly fade in color.

A moss wall challenges dry environments such as Colorado. While the moss can be sprayed with a light mist in order to maintain its natural soft texture, without moisture added it becomes dry and brittle to the touch. A minimum level of humidity of 40-50% is required to maintain a healthy condition and appearance.

Moss walls should not be located near air conditioning or heating vents. Air temperature extremes will degrade the the preserved material.

Moss walls are able to be installed within darker areas. Unlike living plants, a moss wall does not require light and water sources. A moss wall that is kept in a dark environment and provided proper humidity levels, will maintain its look and condition well.

Moss Wall Pricing
There are 2 kinds of moss walls which typically get installed in commercial environments. Preserved Reindeer Moss and Mood Moss. Depending on the look you’re going for both options can look great in a variety of spaces. Preserved Reindeer Moss (which can be dyed to several colors) tends to cost around $85-$100 per square foot installed. This includes the moss and installation labor. Mood Moss typically cost between $65-$85 per square foot. Mood moss is a very natural looking option with great texture. While it isn’t dyed the nature greens and browns of the moss make for a beautiful backdrop to any space. Other expenses include delivery of materials, trip charges (bring the guys out) and dump fees if materials need to be removed.

When you think about ongoing care for moss walls, it’s quite low. In Colorado the moss is going to dry out and become very brittle. When folks walk up and touch it to figure out if it’s real, their finger (or hand) is going to punch a little hole in the moss. The only alternative to this brittle situation would be to squirt the moss with water daily – but this isn’t practical. Instead, expect to pay for a touch up about once per year.
